Government workers taking taxpayers to the cleaners

June 1, 2010 – Ed Lasky

I have written quite often regarding the sweet deals many government workers enjoy because of the power the public employee unions have over Democratic politicians and the public purse. The government employees union’s political action committee is the second largest in the nation. When the union heads don’t get their way despite enormous campaign funds they give to politicians (again, mostly Democrats), they resort to protests and threats (when legalized bribery fails, try threats: the new union motto).

While unions lose members in the private sector they have found new fertile grounds in government. There are now more government workers in unions than private workers. And there are constantly more government workers. We all remember Newsweek’s proclamation “We’re all socialists now”. Well the next proclamation may very well be “We’re all Greeks now”.

We are on the brink of financial ruin because of contracts politicians signed that give the store away to many government employees: deficits for governments at the city, county, state and federal level are sky-high because of pension obligations to these government employees who can often retire at a relatively young age with a panoply of benefits that are costless to them and ruinously expensive to taxpayers.

Investments needed for our future (teaching kids, infrastructure) are being frittered away by current and retired government employees. This brief video is worth viewing for its comprehensive overview of the problems that beset us when we turn our futures over to government unions and the politicians in their pockets.

Must watch presentation by the Center for American Freedom and Prosperity with host Dan Mitchell of the CATO Institute.
