Wisconsin Gov. Rejects Unions ’Red Herring’ Compromise

Watershed Moment in Wisconsin by Roger Kimball. What happens in Madison concerns not only the fate of some whining school teachers, fraud-abetting doctors, and the left-wing activists who are their enablers. It concerns the shape of this country…

Commentary: New York Times’ Slanted Wisconsin Coverage Contrasts With Their Treatment of Tea Party. (and in a related piece, did you here: Tea Partiers, you’re being used. – G. 1) Moulitsas is a swine and you’ll notice we did not provide an active link to his twitter, we won’t give him the traffic. 2) The Governor, State AG, or whoever in WI has the authority, ought to immediately issue orders for the Dem lawmakers to return immediately or face contempt, or even be arrested to force their attendance in cambers. Especially for those, and there’s at least a few now, that have admitted that they are purposely evading and have conspired with others in their caucus who are doing the same.

An Open Letter to Mr. Daily Kos

February 18, 2011 – 9:22 am – by Stephen Green

Dear Mr. Moulitsas,

May I call you Kos? I know everybody else does. Thanks. Anyway, last night you wrote an open letter of your own, on Twitter. It was brief, of course. Surveying the goings-on in Wisconsin, you said, “Dear Tea Baggers, It’s our turn now.”

Well, I suppose it is. And now that both sides have had their turns, let’s compare and contrast. I can’t keep this quite as short as your tweet, but I’ll do my best.

Your people left their protest area looking like this.

We Tea Party folks tend to police our areas with a touch more respect — like this.

Tea Partyers take a day off work, or protest on the weekends.

Your union friends call in “sick” and stage what amounts to an illegal walk-out, leaving thousands of kids with no schools to attend for days on end. It just now occurred to me to wonder what those kids’ working parents are doing with the kids out of school. Will they get their pay docked for having to stay home? Your union friends will probably get full pay — for abandoning their students.

Tea Partyers worry that too much deficit spending is leading the country to ruin.

Your folks worry that too little deficit spending could impact their nine-months-a-year jobs, cushy pay, subsidized health insurance, and generous retirement planswhich the rest of us pay for.

The Tea Party elected more than 80 freshmen Republicans to Congress.

The Democrat Party fled across the state line to Scottish Hooters.

The Tea Party is doing what it can to hold our elected officials accountable to their election promises.

Your people are doing their best to intimidate our elected officials into pretending last November never happened.

Tea Partyers say “don’t tread on me.”

Your friends say “don’t tread on D.C.” Charming.

Anyway, yes, I suppose now is your time in the sun. It’s been quite the education for the country at large, I think. So here’s to hoping you’re enjoying your turn — you’ve certainly earned it.

— Your friendly neighborhood VodkaPundit.

DERELICT WIS DEMOCRATS AND THEIR UNION ALLIES SEEM TO FORGET, THE VOTERS SWEPT REPUBLICANS INTO OFFICE, AND THIS NEFARIOUS SPECIAL INTEREST FUELED DENIAL OF THAT REPRESENTATION IS OUTRAGEOUS. AT LEAST THOSE ELECTED DEMOCRATS HAVE A PROPER VOICE IN THIS ISSUE, THOUGH THEY ARE CHOOSING TO HIDE FROM HAVING TO USE IT, BUT THE UNIONS – NO ONE ELECTED YOU, YOU WORK AGAINST THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE, AGAINST THE TAX PAYERS AS A WHOLE, AND THAT’S WHY COLLECTIVE BARGAINING MUST END. NOBODY IS BUSTING YOUR UNION INTO OBLIVION, THE SKY IS NOT FALLING (EXCEPT FOR YOUR OWN EFFORTS TO GET IT TO), A POWER IS SIMPLY BEING DONE AWAY WITH THAT YOU NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAD IN THE FIRST PLACE. AS WE’VE CONTENDED SO MANY TIMES, THAT UNREPRESENTATIVE MONOPOLIZED POWER IS ONE THAT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL TO BEGIN WITH!

Wisconsin Governor: Dems Will Cave In on Debate

MADISON, Wis. (Reuters) – Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, whose bid to reduce public employee union bargaining power has triggered mass public protest, said Sunday he expects the Democrats who oppose his plan will concede to debate the issue early this week.

Fourteen state Democratic senators, who have left the state to deny the Wisconsin legislature a quorum needed to consider the controversial proposal, have “failed to do their jobs,” the Republican governor said on Fox Network’s “Fox News Sunday.”

“If you want to participate in democracy, you’ve got to be in the arena, and the arena is right here in Madison, Wisconsin,” he said…

Wisconsin is the flashpoint for a U.S. struggle over efforts to roll back pay, benefits and bargaining rights of government workers. If the majority Republicans prevail, other states could be emboldened to take on the powerful unions.Walker said on Fox he expects the Democrats who left the state for Illinois to return in coming days, although one of them has said they are prepared to be away for weeks.

“My hope is that cooler minds will prevail and by some time earlier this coming week they’ll show up for their job,” Walker said. “Democracy is not about hiding out in another state. It’s about showing up here in the capital and making the case there, and for us, we’re willing to take this as long as it takes.”

The Wisconsin State Assembly is due to take up the proposals on Tuesday. Republicans have a large enough majority to quorum in the Assembly without the Democrats.

Officials estimated about 55,000 demonstrators in the state capital on Saturday, but no more than 5,000 appeared to be there for a rally backed by Tea Party groups, the first appearance by members of the limited-government movement.

The bill’s labor backed opponents chanted “Kill the bill,” while supporters countered with “Recall them all,” referring to Democratic state senators who left the state.

THE DEBATE

Walker said the proposal was necessary so that the state’s municipalities can balance their budgets.

“I want to give those local governments the tools they need to balance the budgets now, and they can’t do that with the current collective bargaining laws in this state,” he said.

The Republican law would make state workers contribute more to health insurance and pensions. It also would end government collection of union dues, let workers opt out of unions and require unions to hold recertification votes every year.

Union and Democratic leaders say they are willing to compromise on benefits if Republicans back off on their bid to weaken collective bargaining, but so far Walker and his legislative allies have stood firm.

Walker estimates the state budget deficit for the rest of this fiscal year at $137 million and for the next two fiscal years under its biannual budget at $3.3 billion.

Walker said the alternative is to lay off more than 10,000 public employees.

AND DEFENDING ON THE NEXT FEW DAYS, MAYBE HE SHOULD, BUT IF HE DOES THERE’S ONLY ONE ENTITY FOR THE OPPOSITION TO BLAME – THEMSELVES!

Tea Party Descends on Madison…Public Pension Debate Extends Even to Watertown

Crowds swelled to over 70,000 and the weatherman says snow is on the way in Madison today as Tea Party protestors were bussed in to support Governor Walker in his battle with public employee unions…..
Those on both sides of the issue…fueled by dueling national media coverage…surrounded the state capitol. Meanwhile the ones not there are the Democratic state senators who are hiding out in another state in order to deny the votes necessary to convene a quorum and vote on the Governor’s proposal to require greater contributions to pension and medical plans along with a rollback of collective bargaining rights.
I think the debate is a good one….In fact this week on channel 7 in Watertown, reporter Jessica Shaw begins a sweeps piece titled “The Pension Mess.”
The title is itself a commentary on the system being addressed in Wisconsin.
It’s not often the MSM takes the stance that a government program is a “mess” or a problem. This may be a sign that more people are questioning the viability of the system we have.
While some seek to make it personal….make it an attack on public employees…that’s not the case…
A whole generation has been raised with the notion you can spend more than you take in….that government can “create” jobs….that gaming the system or calling in “sick” when you are not is OK….
Well you can’t spend more than you make…government doesn’t stimulate anything….and its lying to say you are sick just so you can go to the beach or to picket in the state capital.

Budget Battle: Democrats Who Left State are Located ….Wisconsin Boils as Governor Demands Union Concessions

In a slap to the face of representitive government, Democratic members of the Wisconsin State Senate boarded a bus to Illinois today in order to deny a quorum that would allow Republicans a vote on a bill to limit collective bargaining for state workers.
This same thing happened in Texas a few years ago.
The Badger State…once home to the Progressive Party of Robert LaFollette, faces a $3.6 billion budget shortfall and the new governor is taking on the public employee unions.
Meanwhile bitter demonstrations raged in the capital of Madison and teachers in some areas stayed home.

Bussing In Protestors Rumor has it that Uncle Jimbo was on the ground in his home-town of Madison. He files this and one other report over at Blackfive.

Big Journalism has this piece up:
Progressives In Front of WH Protest Effort Mad at Koch Brothers

The President took a public stand against the hard-working private sector families of Wisconsin who are struggling to make ends meet in an post-stimulus era of 9% unemployment.

OFA, the President’s campaign arm, has organized and bussed in hundreds of out-of-state protesters to continue the agitation in Wisconsin.

Yet progressive columnists who, for whatever reason, are allowed to post poorly-written Kos fantasies in a publication like Forbes and are freaking out over, who else? The Koch Brothers. Rick Ungar ironically and generously quotes the Soros-funded Think Progress in his diatribe about the Wisconsin protests.

Even if, for the sake of this ridiculous argument, the Koch brothers were involved in funding a portion of the rally, who cares? Ungar misses the irony of quoting a Soros publication while complaining about the Koch brothers. He misses the irony of standing for government-organized protests. He props up one bajillionaire while whining about another. It’s good enough for progressives to allow the White House to abuse its power and stir up tension in state capitols, yet somehow Ungar finds it within himself to draw a boundary when it comes to conservatives doing the same.
