October 3, 2012 — The Night Liberalism Died

by Roger L Simon

Liberalism will come back, of course, under one of a million names. But for now Mitt Romney has administered it a serious body blow.

Romney triumphs in first debate

The only question is how badly the Obama campaign will be demoralized.

Broken Barack

William L. Gensert @ americanthinker

Mitt Romney destroyed him in the first  debate.  As a political junkie, I have seen my share of debates; my  favorite was Reagan/Carter in 1980, which Reagan won handily. Yet,  this was an even more impressive victory for  Romney.

UNDENIABLE:  ROMNEY 1, OBAMA 0:  Even the lamestream media Obama supporters acknowledge that it was an embarrassing loss for Obama.  And was it me, or did anyone else get the feeling that Obama felt constrained, unable to be himself?  Since his entire campaign has been about dividing Americans into rich vs. poor, white vs. non-white, religious vs. non-religious, etc., he seemed uncomfortable because his audience wasn’t his “base” but the entirety of the American people,  most of whom abhor this type of demographic warfare.  He couldn’t play the race card, the gender card, the class warfare card, etc.  And unfortunately, those seem to be the only cards in his deck. Without them, he’s just defensive and kind of sad.

PETER INGEMI:  Why Mitt Won Tonight.

Posted at 11:27 pm by Glenn Reynolds

Obama looked tired, even bored; he kept looking down; he had no crisp statements of passion or argument; he wasn’t there. He was entirely defensive, which may have been the strategy. But it was the wrong strategy. At the wrong moment.

The person with authority on that stage was Romney – offered it by one of the lamest moderators ever, and seized with relish. This was Romney the salesman. And my gut tells me he sold a few voters on a change tonight. It’s beyond depressing. But it’s true.

Will Andrew to revert to Pauline Kael mode and claim once again, “I don’t know why anybody voted for Obama in the primaries?”

CHRIS MATTHEWS IN POST-DEBATE MELTDOWN: “We have our knives out! We go after the people and the facts! What was [Obama] doing tonight — he went in there disarmed!”

Funny, I can remember less than two years ago, when Matthews was agreeing with his guests that eliminationist rhetoric and weaponry-related metaphors were racist and should be stricken from the airwaves.

One of my customers just emailed me, “OK, I’ll admit it, I get a woodie listening to Romney during this debate.”

He voted for Obama.

Ouch.  Yeah, Romney was channeling Reagan.  Obama was channeling Biden.

“THE DEBATE HAS BEEN VERY VERTICAL SO FAR,” says Jaltcoh (my son), noting that “Moderator Jim Lehrer asks Obama to expand on the idea of trickle-down government, and Obama responds by explaining his education policy of ‘race to the top.’” I’m trying to live-blog too. Not sure how much I have to say, but there’s a very active comments thread.

STEPHEN GREEN IS DRUNKBLOGGING TONIGHT’S DEBATE.  I suspect a lot of us will be drinking through this one. . . .

Green:  “Obama is doing his best I’M NOT PEEVISH face. If the all-caps didn’t give it away, the face is not entirely convincing.”  He also keeps stressing how much he agrees with Romney on taxes, etc.  Interesting. . . .

UPDATE:  Okay, despite the lying, people on the right should be glad that this is an argument about who’ll cut taxes.

But why does Lehrer keep cutting Romney off?

More from Stephen Green:  “Romney is doing the job of making Obama angry, without being mean. The split-view camera reminds me of Bush versus Gore 12 years ago.”

Plus:  “Obama keeps saying ‘math,’ but Romney keeps using numbers.  You do the math.”

Obama compares himself to Dwight Eisenhower.  Not seeing it.  And remember that promise to cut the deficit in half in his first term?  How’s that working out? . . .

Reader Tim Miller writes:  “I wish Romney would tell Obama that he’s confusing the 5 Trillion number with the debt he’s added during the past 3+ years.”  I think it’s more like $7 trillion.

Warren Buffett won’t like that corporate jet remark.

Plus from Stephen Green:  “Obama just slammed the F-22. I guess Lockheed is going to send out those layoff notices after all. If not, they’re fools.”

Obama’s blaming Bush for the deficits because of “two wars on the credit card.”  So look at Bush’s second-term deficits:

Declining steadily until the 2008 bailout.  Blaming the war is, well, basically a lie.

Also, Obama keeps mentioning “folks like my grandmother.”  You mean the “typical white person” grandmother?  I guess she’s back out from under the bus.

Reader Bob Read emails:  “Are you watching Intrade? Obama is down 5 since the debate started.”

Stephen Green:  “Romney has been practicing his split-screen face. When Obama is speaking, he looks like I hope I look, when my six-year-old is trying to sell me on a line of total crap.”

I’m watching C-SPAN, but reader Ed Kiesel emails: “The twitter feed at the bottom of CNBC is 90% pro Romney, and damn is it funny!”

Lehrer is doing his best to run interference for Obama, but it’s not enough.

Talking about Dodd-Frank, it’s obvious that Romney actually knows what Dodd-Frank does.  Obama, not so much.

More from Stephen Green:  ” Aaron Hanscom, our managing editor, just emailed to tell me Andrew Sullivan is wailing and rending his garments over Obama’s bad performance.  What, he was expecting another McCain?”

Jonah Goldberg tweets:  “Maybe Obama can turn this around by just reverting to his 2004 DNC Keynote speech?”

Obama:  They’re not “Death Panels,” they’re just panels made up of expert doctors who’ll decide if your treatment should be paid for.

Posted at 8:58 pm by Glenn Reynolds

CHARLIE MARTIN:  Watching The Polls Unskew.

Some people are suspicious.“I think they adjust the skew to get the result that suits the propaganda purpose, and they’re temporarily making the race look tight to make the debate seem super-important. (That’s good for CNN’s ratings, so there’s a commercial, nonpolitical reason too for poll fakery.) Then they can make a show of breaking the news that Obama got big debate bounce.”  When Obama voters feel this way, you know the press has lost credibility.

CURIOSER AND CURIOSER: More Poll Dancing.  (In this as with announcements that unemployment is falling or that income is “skyrocketing” in the rustbelt… or with ignoring the Benghazi outrage, or with their several “summers of recovery” the media is gaslighting * us.  Or, in more earthy terms — they’re er… urinating down our necks and telling us it’s raining.) *

BARACK OBAMA’S HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY: Sometimes Obama benefits from the fact that even stuff against him comes out in a torrent when it comes, and therefore a lot of it gets buried.  So here it is, all in one place!  well… all for one day, that is.

Posted at 8:22 pm by Sarah Hoyt

Jean B• I have to say I am sick of hearing how Romney doesn’t discuss the details of his plan.  Has anyone read his plan on his website or his app?  It is detailed, while Obama site and app gives only talking points and no details.  Tell people where to find the details on the Romney plan, geez tell people to go to the library if they don’t have a computer and read it for themselves, for pete’s sake!!!

Drunkblogging the First Presidential Debate

Live from CPAC Colorado in Denver — with a possible surprise guest or two.
by Stephen Green

Here we go:

6:05PM Ah. I see. It’s all BOOOOOOOOOOOSH’S fault.

Drink if you didn’t see that one coming.

Oh, and GM.

6:06PM “New sources of energy.” Frack that.

6:07PM First real laugh of the night goes to Romney, for apologizing for being the “romantic” element of the Obama’s 20th anniversary.

6:08PM Obama is doing is best I’M NOT PEEVISH face. If the all-caps didn’t give it away, the face is not entirely convincing.

6:09PM “Trickle down government.” It’s a good phrase, but it got a little lost in the five-point shuffle.

6:10PM “We’ve made enormous progress,” Bipartisan progress, even.

Also: 100,000 new math and science teachers and low tuition and lower taxes and PLEASE BELIEVE ME WHEN I TELL YOU I’M BILL CLINTON. Because he was great at my convention, am I right, people?

6:11PM Three words, Mr. President: So. Lynn. Duh.

6:11PM Kudos to Lehrer for calling Obama on his filibuster.

6:12PM “High income people are doing just fine in this economy.’

I think Mitt just drew first blood.

6:13PM And there is the total I AM THE PEEVISH KING look.

Sorry for the Nightmare Before Christmas reference, but tis the season.

6:13PM Mitt has Come. Out. Swinging.

6:14PM “I like coal.” Do you hear me, Pennsylvania?

6:15PM Shorter Obama: I bought you a computer! Doesn’t it look nice next to your ObamaPhone?

6:16PM “The only way to meet Romney’s pledge is…”

I dunno… Simpson-Bowles?

6:16PM Fillibuster-in-Chief.

That’s what I’m getting from the right side of the screen, anyway.

6:19PM Romney is doing the job of making Obama angry, without being mean. The split-view camera reminds me of Bush versus Gore 12 years ago.

I swear, I could live to be a million and six, and I will never forget watching Romney force Obama into channeling Ron Burgundy.

6:22PM Damn you, damn you Mitt Romney for using math.

6:23PM “The same idea behind Bowles-Simpson, by the way.”

Slam. I don’t know how well most people will appreciate that, but… awesome’

And then Obama tried to change the subject,

6:24PM Obama keeps saying “math,” but Romney keeps using numbers.

You do the math.

6:25PM It’s… mind-blowing… for lack of a better word, watching Obama trying to run on Clinton’s record. Just…

The audacity of total crap.

6:26PM “Voting for the status quo is not going to cut it for the American people.”

THAT is the pitch.

6:28PM I just watched an out-of-work fund manager politely tell the President of the United States to stand still and wait his turn — and totally made him do it.

Wow. Wow.

6:29PM BOOOOOOOOSH> Two Wars. Deficits. Credit cards.

Oh, sell it in Hyde Park.

6:30PM Obama just slammed the F-22. I guess Lockheed is going to send out those layoff notices after all. If not, they’re fools.

6:30PM My deficit plan is on my website. It has an 800 number.

6:31PM Let you be clear?

Just this once, I demand that you obfuscate.

6:32PM “We still show trillion dollar deficits every year.”

Math is hard.

6:35PM “Let’s talk about corporate taxes. I’ve identified areas…”

Then what have you been doing the last four years?

6:36PM “We’re going to help young people.”

Again, what have you been doing the last four years?

6:39PM “You don’t pick the winners and losers. You pick the losers.”

“I’ve been in business 25 years, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Summer schooled.

6:40PM “One of the magnificent things about this country…”

After four years, I’ve missed that kind of language.

6:41PM In rebuttal to Solyndra and business and all the rest, Obama is talking about… his grandmother.

And I will rebut the rebuttal by playing the world’s smallest violin.

6:45PM “You would turn Medicare into a voucher program.” Which is, like, totally uncool after I cut $716,000,000,000 out of it.

6:47PM Romney has been practicing his split-screen face. When Obama is speaking, he looks like I hope I look, when my six-year-old is trying to sell me on a line of total crap.

6:50PM It’s gotten so bad, that every time Romney speaks, Obama looks like Martin Landau playing Bela Lugosi jonesing for a heroin fix.

6:51PM From the peanut gallery: “Romney is moderating AND participating.”

6:52PM Mr. President? The answer is not written on your hand.

I think.

6:55PM “I wouldn’t designate five banks as ‘too big to fail’ and hand them a blank check.”

6:56PM “It’s been two years, we don’t know what a qualified mortgage is yet.”

Paralysis is another word for stasis, which is the vil prog end game. It’s a philosophy of modern feudalism.

6:58PM Aaron Hanscom, our managing editor, just emailed to tell me Andrew Sullivan is wailing and rending his garments over Obama’s bad performance.

What, he was expecting another McCain?

I love it when he has to remind people about the law we all hate.

7:01PM Mr President? You don’t negotiate for five seconds. You negotiate for the end of your answer.

This is why Iran will end up with nukes.

7:03PM Wow. Obama looks mad, now that the subject is the ill effects of the law bearing his name.

7:04PM From the peanut gallery: “You can stay on your parents’ Medicare.”

7:23PM  Obama, peevish, scripted.  Romney, relaxed, and owning the stage like one of the “big, swinging dicks” from Wall Street, which Obama both despises and relies upon.

And that’s the trick tonight, isn’t it?  Obama has always relied on the big money men in private, while disparaging them in public.  But what happens when he comes up against one of them in the most public  way possible?
Now we know the answer, and it ain’t pretty.
The president appeared small and petulant and reactive.  Romney looked presidential and secure and proactive.  There was only one president on the stage tonight, and he doesn’t (yet) hold the office.
Stephen Green began blogging at VodkaPundit.com in early 2002, and has served as PJMedia’s Denver editor since 2008.  He’s one of the hosts on PJTV, and one-third of PJTV’s Trifecta team with Scott Ott and Bill Whittle. Steve lives with his wife and sons in the hills and woods of Monument, Colorado, where he enjoys the occasional lovely adult beverage.

Romney missed one….the president said budgets are important….Romney should have said simething like you must not think so or you would have one.

Romney did remind Obama that he had been in office for almost four years and had not had a budget.

The big lines were Mitt Romney saying that Obama picks losers and Obama’s gaffe at saying that budgets reflect choices.

  • Romney Schooled Obama! Wow what a nice change to hear someone knowledgable speak. Go Mitt!

  • Romney mentioned the Constitution and religion and religion and Obama never mentioned either…
  • Proven case when Obama doesn’t have his telepromptor he’s not the sharp orator he is when he reads! Romney was passionate, on fire, addressed his background on economics and he’s walked the talk. He can get the country back on track has he’s proven with his own businesses!
  • Mitt kicked butt.  It was interesting how BO kept criticizing Romney for lack of details when he himself never has anything specific to say about anything.
  • Romney clearly won with confidence and being on point. Obama didn’t seem to listen, but kept referring to his notecards and repeating the same talking points he’s been saying on the campaign trail. No real banter by the President.
  • SCORECARD: 1.  Economy and jobs                   Romney Won 2.  Federal debt                            Romney Won 3.  Entitlements                             Romney Won 4.  Fed. Regulations                     Romney Won 5.  Health Care                             Romney Won 6.  Role of Gov’t                           Romney Won The next POTUS  Romney The ONLY thing obama won was time talked: obama 42 min 50 sec   –   Romney 38 min 32 sec

When Obama spoke, Romney looked to be thinking; when Romney spoke, Obama just looked irritated. The philosopher-king does not like to be questioned!
  • You will have to ask a body language specialist, but it looked to me like Obama was so ashamed of himself that he couldn’t look Romney in the eyes. Everytime Romney spoke Obama lowered his head and his eyes downward. Maybe Obama felt like he was getting scolded by his parent or his boss. I give the 1st debate a Romney victory !!

call me crazy but if I had a plan to fix the problems Obama created ,would I want to give all the details to the person i’m running against?I didn’t see Obama giving any specifics!
The highlight of the night when Romney stated to the President “I don’t know what your talking about” when the President tried to explain tax breaks on exporting jobs—————————————————Exactly.  Romney knows how it works.  Obama doesn’t.  he doesn’t make sense.  Romney pointed that out.

Romney sounds more like JFK. Now I realize he got into Harvard because of merit. He is an intelligent man. I like the way he corrected the POTUS on the latter’s numbers and facts.

Romney looked like he WAS the President. It was very obvious that he knew MORE about how to improve the economy, how to create jobs, how to get America back on track than Obama (who kept looking down and didn’t make eye contact with Romney).  Watching Obama was down right embarassing, his answers were so pathetic.

Sorry Mr. President:  People are not going to forget about Obamacare, Death panels, cutting 716 billion from Medicare, and loosing their private healthcare insurance.  You took services away from some to give to others!   Why do you need a panel of 15 experts to decide what treatment the people will get if they aren’t deciding our treatments?  Romney is right, the federal government should not dictate to the American people what kind of Medical care they will get.

Romney’s debate performance was EXCELLENT!! He deftly refused to let Obama paint him with his lies (5 trillion) etc. His point on the 90 billion for green energy (with 50% failing) could have hired 2 million teachers was spot on. Enjoyed the comment on his 5 sons and repeating what you want to be reality. CLEAR WINNER. Obama was defensive, stuttered, did not keep on topic and kept looking down, He looked pathetic not the leader of the free world (which he has done a lousy job at). ROMNEY LOOKS LIKE A PRESIDENT.
