Apologies to all those aspiring Miss Americas out there: being crowned the most beautiful and well-rounded woman in the country does not have the cachet that it used to. In 1960, the pageant had a television audience of 85 million, while in 2010 the pageant drew a mere 4.5 million. Yet a new beauty event –the Miss Liberty America pageant—could breathe some new life into the old routine.

Founded by artist Alicia Hayes-Roberts, the pageant, which will take place in Las Vegas in July 2012, inspired blogosphere buzz after Mother Jones labeled the event “the first-ever Tea Party beauty paegant [sic].” Mediaite, The Week, Jezebel and other media outlets re-reported the story, which mentioned that the CFO of Miss Liberty America is Rutherford B. Hayes (no relation to the former president), brother of Alicia Hayes-Roberts and a 2012 presidential candidate with Tea Party values.

His website states that if he is elected president, he will surround himself with “PATRIOTS that truly love America and want to preserve her integrity.”

In an email to POLITICO, Hayes wrote: “As a 2012 presidential independent candidate, I would like to state for the record that I believe we have been Taxed Enough Already. In addition, I stand and represent the documents of our founding fathers and their vision for America. Having said that; Miss Liberty America’s platform is the documents of our founding fathers and the preservation of them for ALL Americans.”

Alicia Hayes-Roberts says that while she is “more than proud of her brother,” his political beliefs have nothing to do with the nature of the Miss Liberty America pageant.

“Miss Liberty America is for all Americans. Documents of the Founding Fathers are for all Americans no matter what affiliation,” Hayes-Roberts told POLITICO by phone from California. “I was not aware that there was a party in America that owned those documents.” The pageant founder said she was perplexed by Mother Jones’ assumption that the pageant was Tea Party affiliated, and made a statement to the site clarifying it was not.

“I personally support the Tea Party,” Hayes-Roberts said. “But it is not a Tea Party pageant. I’m not against them, I’m not. But a Tea Party pageant would alienate the rest of the country.”

Indeed, Hayes-Roberts hopes Miss Liberty America does anything but alienate Americans; she’s hoping to make the pageant as inclusive as possible and more academically rigorous than pageants like Miss America and Miss USA. The panel of judges will be racially diverse; to qualify as a Miss Liberty America contestant, women have to boast at least a 3.5 grade point average. In another twist to classic pageants, the women also have to be registered to vote, be CPR certified and must be proficient in the “handling, use and safety of firearms.”

“It is about diversity, it is about breaking down those boundaries. Even for those who are not citizens, you come to America to obtain a dream that could not be obtained anywhere else in the world,” said Hayes-Roberts.

According to the pageant website,  Miss Liberty America is “is dedicated to discovering America’s elite feminine patriots and giving them the opportunity on a national stage to showcase their patriotism, intelligence, talent, and beauty. The ultimate mission is to promote Liberty, the military, and the documents of our founding fathers.” The women will be judged on personal interview, swimsuit (all contestants will wear one-piece bathing suits), beauty, eveningwear, talent, marksmanship and knowledge of the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence.

The last two categories have so far been the most talked about, since displaying knowledge of America’s founding documents will comprise a very high 25 percent of a contestant’s total score—more than any other category.

“They won’t get asked what the Second Amendment is, but what it means to her and why. If she doesn’t know the amendment, she won’t be able to answer,” explained Hayes-Roberts.

As for the physical handling of firearms, women will be shooting targets and be judged by a panel of military personnel. “There was actually somebody that said, ‘I can see it now, a stadium where the women are shooting and someone gets killed,’” said the pageant founder. “One of the reasons I chose the Second Amendment is because it is very controversial but it does not negate the fact that it is my right and it’s yours. I want to arm young women with knowledge, I want to arm them literally, and with the fact that they can save a life. I want them to aspire to something more. Can you imagine if every person was certified in CPR? Now that’s empowering.”

Surely the focus on firearms will weed out the gun-shy portion of the potential pageant population. Yet Hayes-Roberts hopes that the requirement would instead empower women of all stripes and political persuasions. “Each one of us is a building block that makes America strong,” said Hayes-Roberts. “No block is better than another one.”

Spoken just like a pageant queen.
